Images of original workbook

In the 1980s Hollywood Heritage created a printed Walking Tour and Activity Book called Greetings from Hollywood. We created it in collaboration with organizations in Hollywood to promote and tell the story of the origins of Hollywood and the elements that made it into a Historic District. It contained history, lots of fun activities, and walking maps of sections of the Boulevard.

In 2022, thanks to a grant from the National Trust, we embarked on a journey to re-envision the workbook for a 2022 audience. The result is an Ebook that explores the History and Story of Hollywood in more depth, as well as making sure to tell the often unheard stories that shaped the community.

We chose to create an Ebook so that we can add to and adapt it as we go forward. Every day we unearth stories of the vibrant tale of the Boulevard, and we want to make sure we can share as much of it as possible.

This website will be the home of all things activity book. Our plan is to add more stories, videos, games and other creations all designed to deepen your love and interest in this unique part of Los Angeles. More to come!

It is a book for kids of ALL ages – with activities, walking tours, and lots of history. There are lots of hidden morsels to discover, including Deep Dive histories, videos and photos tracing the development of Hollywood. Once we started digging, more and more stories leapt out. Enjoy!

Hollywood Heritage was founded in 1980 by Marian Gibbons, Mildred Heredeen, Christy Johnson (McAvoy), Frances Offenhauser, and Susan Peterson (St. Francis), with assistance from former Los Angeles County Supervisor John Anson Ford. The founders met while volunteering for the Hollywood Revitalization Committee, involved in the first-ever historic survey for world-famous Hollywood.

Hollywood Heritage works to preserve and protect the historic built environment of Hollywood by actively interacting with city, state, and federal agencies, as well as by educating the public through the Hollywood Heritage Museum (the Lasky DeMille Barn) and the Preservation Resource Center.
